In order for the content you create to rank in search engines and drive as much traffic as possible to your website, you need to add keywords. What is the best keyword research method for finding keywords your website needs to get a higher rank?
What are Keywords?
When you think about keywords you might think back to the early days of the Internet when people were repeating hundreds and hundreds of the same phrase on their website so search engines would recognize their site and rank it higher when people searched for that term.
Thankfully search engines have gotten much better since then.
Today, with search engines like Google, the search results are listed by which websites have the most relevant information for a specific search term and then provides you the top results. That specific search term that someone would enter in Google are the keywords you will focus your website posts and pages on.
What Makes a Good Keyword?
When you begin to write content for your website you will need to find search terms that people have been searching for within your business niche in order to create a relevant post around that topic. The more people that are searching for what you are writing about means the more potential traffic that you will have to your site.
The reason researching and finding the right keywords and creating quality content around those keywords is so important is because your brand new website is a small dot in the great big world of the Internet. There are websites that have been around for many years and have thousands of pages of content so in order to be competitive you have to target very niche keywords that don’t have a ton of competition.
3 Tips to consider when finding keywords your website needs
(1) Low COMPETITION. Broad keywords that people are searching for regularly such as “lose weight” can sometimes get hundreds of thousands of searches each month. You might be thinking that’s a good thing but that same keyword also has hundreds, if not thousands of websites with the exact same keyword phrase already.
Since the keyword phrase “lose weight” is so popular, if you create a post targeting it then it could take years and hundreds of pages of content for you to rank even in the top 3 or 4 pages of Google.
If your posts never rank in Google then all that hard work you put in creating that content has been wasted if no one ever sees it.
For you to be able to start ranking in the top few pages of Google right away you need to target a keyword phrase that not many other websites have already created content around.
My recommendation is to target keyword phrases that have less than 150 other competing pages, also known as Quote Search Results (QSR), but try to get as close to zero as possible. The reason for this is because since your website is so new, the first few months that you add content should be focused on ranking in the top 1 or 2 pages of Google.
As you create more and more content that has a low QSR you will start building an authority in your business niche and your rankings will start to move up. If your post is already very close to the first page of Google then it’s not going to take much to take over the top spot.
Keyword Tip #1: Under 150 QSR
(2) Needs TRAFFIC. The keyword phrase that you build your content around must also be something that people are searching for. Specific, long-tail keywords such as “how to lose weight with yoga” is going to still turn up results but since there’s not thousands of people searching for that phrase the competition will be low.
Just because a certain keyword phrase doesn’t have thousands of people searching for it each month doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it.
I would recommend using keywords that have at least 50 people searching for them each month. As you continue to regularly add content to your website targeting keywords that have at least some people searching for them, the greater potential your website will have for people to find relevant posts.
Another bonus for using keywords that don’t have many searches per month is that they usually have very low competition so you are more likely to rank higher and capture the traffic.
Keyword Tip #2: At least 50 searches per month
(3) Needs to MAKE SENSE. One of the most important things that you can’t forget when you are creating content and finding keywords your website needs is that real people are going to be visiting your site. If the title of your post doesn’t make sense then fewer people are likely to want to read it.
Take, for example, the following keyword phrases:
“how to lose weight fast” vs. “how lose weight fast”
If you were to read a post titled with the first keyword you would not think anything of it and maybe even read the pose. However, if you were to read the second keyword post you might skip it because it doesn’t make sense grammatically.
Even though the second keyword has a ton of searches and low QSR doesn’t mean that people are going to want to read your post. You have to remember you are creating content to help people, not search engines.
Keyword Tip #3: Keyword phrase should make grammatical sense
